A Declaration by the Concerned Citizens of the United States
In times of national reckoning, when leadership threatens the foundations of democracy, decency, and the rule of law, it is necessary for citizens to speak up, stand firm, and explain why they can no longer support such leadership.
We believe the following truths are self-evident: that very person is due equal rights and treatment under the law and that truth, justice, compassion, and accountability are fundamental to a free society. Governments exist to protect these rights, and their power comes from the people.
When a leader undermines these values, it is not only our right, but our responsibility to resist, to speak out, and to demand leadership that reflects the best of who we are.
The record of the current administration is one of repeated harm and abuse of power, aimed at dismantling democratic norms and weakening constitutional checks and balances. The facts speak for themselves.
The President has…
-
incited an attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, threatening the peaceful transfer of power.
-
spread lies and conspiracy theories, eroding trust in elections, institutions, science, and truth.
-
labeled the free press “the enemy of the people,” undermining a cornerstone of democracy.
-
used his position for personal gain, ignoring ethical boundaries and the emoluments clause.
-
pressured foreign governments to interfere in U.S. elections for his own benefit.
-
appointed loyalists instead of qualified experts, weakening essential institutions.
-
enacted cruel immigration policies, including family separations and xenophobic rhetoric.
-
tried to politicize the judiciary, law enforcement, and intelligence agencies.
-
fueled division and hate, emboldening extremist groups and stoking racial tensions.
-
refused to accept the results of a fair election, launching baseless legal challenges and pressuring officials to overturn the outcome.
-
He threatened critics and opponents with authoritarian language.
-
He disregarded the rule of law, facing multiple indictments while claiming immunity from accountability.
Americans have called for justice and reform. Pleas have fallen on deaf ears and have been met with more harm. A leader who behaves like a demagogue is unfit to lead a free people.
So we, the concerned citizens of the United States, declare:
We will not be ruled by fear, lies, or tyranny.
We reject the normalization of dishonesty, cruelty, and corruption.
We recommit ourselves to democracy, justice, and the pursuit of a more perfect union.
And with full faith in the courage of the American people and the strength of the rule of law, we pledge to one another our voices, our votes, and our vigilance.
